Am I too old, or too shy, to learn a language?
The short answer
No. Adults learn languages successfully all the time; you may keep an accent, but understanding and real conversation are open at any age, and adults are often faster in the first months because they can plan and use tools. If you are shy, start with listening, privately. Speaking can wait until you feel ready.
Age: what is true and what is myth
- True: children who grow up with a language usually end up with a native accent; adults often keep some accent.
- Myth: that adults cannot reach real understanding and conversation. They can, and do.
- An adult advantage: you can choose material, use review systems and know why you are doing it.
Shy? Start where nobody is watching
Input first means the first weeks are just you, your headphones and things you enjoy. When you do talk, start small: one line to a friend, a tutor, or the community.

Questions people also ask
Is 40 or 50 too old to learn Japanese or Korean?
No. Many people start in their 40s, 50s and later. Expect to keep some accent, and expect real understanding with steady practice.
How can I practise speaking if I am shy?
First listen a lot, then repeat lines quietly along with audio, then try written chat, then a single short voice message. Small steps.
