How do polyglots learn languages?

The short answer

Not with a special talent. Most polyglots repeat the same loop for every language: a strong reason, lots of listening to things they enjoy, whole sentences learned in context, a review system so words come back before they are forgotten, then real conversations where people correct them. It is a sport, and they enjoy the training.

1. A real reason

A person to talk to, a show, a trip, a family. The reason is what makes the hours happen.

2. Input first: listen a lot

Before speaking much, they hear the language a lot, starting with material that is simple and slow enough to follow.

“Just anything which has sentences or simple dialogues that are simple enough for you and slow enough for you.”Languy · from a recorded lesson

3. Sentences, not word lists

Words are learned inside natural sentences, with a translation at first as training wheels, then less and less.

“So that translation is your training wheels. You don't begin by guessing. You begin by being shown.”Languy · from a recorded lesson

4. Review before you forget

A spaced-repetition system (Anki and similar) shows a card again soon if it was hard, and days later if it was easy.

“you keep reviewing the things that you've done before. And you keep listening to new sentences”Languy · from a recorded lesson

5. Real people

Then conversation: friends, tutors, strangers. Mistakes are part of the training.

“I talk with the people. I improve. They correct me.”Languy · from a recorded lesson
“It was a sport for me. It was a challenge. It was a computer game.”Languy · from a recorded lesson

Questions people also ask

Are polyglots just naturally talented?

Talent helps less than people think. What polyglots share is a repeatable routine, many hours and enjoying the process.

Do polyglots learn grammar first?

Most learn mainly through input and sentences, and look up grammar when a pattern confuses them, rather than starting with grammar tables.
