Which language should I learn first?

The short answer

The one you have the strongest reason for: a person you want to talk to, the shows or music you already love, a place you will go. Difficulty matters less than desire, because desire is what produces the hours. If you love anime, Japanese. If you love K-dramas or K-pop, Korean. Pick one and give it 90 days.

Decide in five minutes

  1. Which language do you already spend time hearing?
  2. Who would you most love to talk to?
  3. Where would you most love to go?

The language with the most answers wins.

Japanese or Korean?

Both are in the US government's hardest group for English speakers. Both are very doable with a real reason.

Can I learn two at once?

Possible, but most beginners do better with one until it feels comfortable. The second one then goes faster.

Questions people also ask

Is Korean easier than Japanese?

Korean's alphabet is quicker to learn; Japanese has kanji but simpler sounds. Overall they are similarly demanding, so choose by what you love.

Should I learn Spanish first because it is easier?

Only if you want Spanish. An "easier" language you do not care about is harder to stick with than a hard one you love.
