Can you learn Korean from K-dramas?
The short answer
Yes, if you mine them instead of only bingeing them. Dramas give you natural Korean, polite and casual speech, and the same everyday phrases again and again. Pick a few lines per episode, understand them fully with Korean subtitles, review them, and re-watch the scene. Binge the rest for fun.
Why dramas are great input
You hear the levels of politeness in action: how people talk to a boss, a friend, a grandmother. Phrases like 괜찮아 (it's okay), 진짜? (really?) and 미안해 (sorry) appear in nearly every episode.
The traps
- English subtitles pull your eyes away from Korean.
- Dramatic speech (shouting, very formal historical dramas) is not how most people talk day to day.
- Watching without saving anything plateaus.
The routine
- Watch the episode for fun.
- Pick 3 short lines.
- Re-watch those scenes with Korean subtitles.
- Put the lines in a review deck with audio.
- Re-watch next week; notice what you now catch.
