Can you learn Hangul in a day?
The short answer
Many people can learn to sound out Hangul in a day or two. It has 24 basic letters (14 consonants and 10 vowels) arranged in syllable blocks, and it was designed in the 15th century under King Sejong to be easy to learn. Reading quickly takes a few more weeks of reading real words.
A one-day plan
- Hour 1: the 10 basic vowels (ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ ㅜ ㅡ ㅣ and the y-versions).
- Hour 2: the 14 basic consonants.
- Hour 3: how blocks work: 가, 나, 한, 국.
- Hour 4: read real words: 김치, 한국, 사랑, your favourite idol's name.
Then 10 minutes a day reading words you know from songs and dramas.
The tricky parts
- Double consonants (ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ) and aspirated ones (ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅊ) take ear practice.
- Sounds change between syllables, so words are not always read letter by letter. Listening with the text fixes this.

Questions people also ask
Should I use romanization for Korean?
Only for the first hours. Hangul is quick to learn, and romanization hides the real sounds.
Is Hangul easier than Japanese kana?
Hangul has fewer basic letters and one system; Japanese has two kana sets plus kanji. Most learners find Hangul quicker to read.
