What changed things was reading up on how people actually acquire a language — the research is decades old and consistent: you grow when you understand real input a notch above your level, a little every day, before you ever force yourself to produce it. That's roughly how you picked up your first language as a kid, minus any grammar chart.
So I stopped studying about languages and started consuming real ones — shows, songs, conversations, half-understood at first. I'd jump into something like an opera in German only catching a third of it, and just stay in it. The rest builds over time, and mistakes along the way are part of how it builds, not a setback.
