Why bother at all

It’s the best investment because it stays with you. Money can be taken away — possessions, everything. This? Never. Unless they take your brain, and if they take your brain you won’t even know, so it doesn’t matter.

I made the smartest investment of my life and now it just compounds. I watch shows in it, read books in it, go to countries with it, talk to people with it. It is amazing.

— Languy

It’s all about levelling up every day. It’s not about the end goal. Just do it for the fun of it.

Two birds, one stone: the thing you already like to watch becomes the practice. You are not spending an hour on a language app. You are watching what you were going to watch anyway, and getting better at the same time.

That's the whole trick

One sentence stays put. One word moves. Your brain picks up the pattern on its own — the same way it did with your first language, years before anyone showed you a grammar table. Every sentence says itself out loud.

So I stopped memorising phrases and started collecting frames. Learn one and you can say a hundred things with it.

How I actually learn one

  1. Sentences, never word lists. A word on its own has no job. A sentence is a thing you can actually say to somebody today.
  2. Collect frames, not phrases. "I'm ___" is a frame. Learn one and you can say a hundred things with it. Learn a phrase and you can say one.
  3. Move one word at a time. Keep the frame still and change a single word — that is the whole trick you felt at the top of this page. The pattern teaches itself, the way your first language did, years before grammar tables.
  4. Ears before eyes. Hear it before you read it. Reading first teaches you to see a language. You want to recognise it coming at you at speed.
  5. Say it out loud, immediately. Not later, not in your head. The mouth learns a shape by making it, and it is the part everyone skips.
  6. Every day beats every long session. Ten minutes daily will pass six hours on a Sunday, every time. It is about levelling up every day — it was never about the end goal.

That is the method. It works the same whether you picked Spanish or Korean, and it is yours now whether you ever give me a penny. Below are the three habits that make it stick.

School left me exactly where it left you — years of it, still unable to say anything. What changed was doing these three things instead, and they're the same three whether you picked Spanish or Korean. Take them. You don't owe me an email for them.

  1. Change your phone's language

Settings, language, make the one you're learning the main one. That's the whole move. You'll be lost for about three days, mildly smug by day seven, and reading it without noticing by day thirty — because it puts the language in the place you already look ninety times a day.

  2. Kill the English subtitles

English subtitles train exactly one skill: reading English fast. Your ears do nothing. Switch them to the language you're learning, or turn them off and accept understanding less. Understanding 60% with your ears beats understanding 100% with your eyes, every single time.

  3. Echo it, don't wait

Put on anything with a voice in it and repeat what you hear about a tenth of a second behind, out loud, while it's still playing. Don't wait for the sentence to end and don't translate in your head — echo it like a reflex. Your mouth learns the shape of a language this way in a fortnight of ten-minute goes.

How long does it take? For a European language I'd say three or four months — that's my honest guess from having done it, not a promise, and the ones with a different alphabet took me longer. There are eleven more of these where the three above came from, and they're all free.

The rest of the method

You've got three of the fourteen. The other eleven arrive one at a time, and so does the part that matters more than any single trick: the order to run them in, and what to do on the days you can't be bothered. All of it free — the method is the free part.

  1. The moment you type ityour first real Spanish sentence opens on this page with the audio, plus the whole chain for your language.
  2. Over the next three weeks — five emails that are the method itself: why whole sentences beat word lists, how to use a show you already love, and the shift from memorising to understanding. A real sentence in every one.
  3. Then one technique a week — the other eleven, out of the book I wrote. Something to do that night, never a pep talk.

One tap, if you want: what language did you grow up speaking?

It's the whole trick of this room — the person learning your language is a native of the one you're learning. This is how I pair the two of you. Skip it and nothing changes.
